Stage Makeup

Stage makeup is the core for every artist. It is a necessity when it comes to performing or appearing on stage. Stage make up artist goes through an extensive training as stage makeup is not just a normal day to day make up practice. But it requires expertise and knowledge on what you are doing. It is a much more full on make up practice.  This is because the features needs to stand out from a distance. Most importantly making sure bright lights and pictures don’t wash you out. The objective of a stage make up goes a long way in creating harsh lines, overdrawn shapes and contours (Framing the face is the concept of contours). Here I will give you some factors to consider for a stage makeup experience.

Stage Makeup

Enhancing Features.

Enhance features is of prime importance for any stage make up experience. Considering the audience is not to close but far away from you, it is necessary to thoroughly enhance the features of the face. This will enable the audience to perfectly depicts the mood of the person on stage. Whether being happy, sad, distraught or angry. This is why I said stage makeup requires a lot of expertise.

Now, using the high and low techniques can make you achieve a success in enhancing features. For example, using larger and darker brows will exaggerate the mood of the person on stage. For an angry Mood, use close set brows and in the beginning angles downwards. The bone structures needs to be well placed using light tones to portray up or outwards and dark tones which naturally goes inwards.

Makeup Techniques And Manipulating features.

Considering theater acts and stage performances as ever changing, so as costumes and makeups. Recently, there is the need for delicate looks for stage makeup to catch up with the continuous and ever changing stages and theaters demand. Artists now need to appear in a much more realistic way to portray a sense of realness in performances. This has made stage makeups artist to stand on their toes and to be an expert in what they do. They can now turn a 40 year old to be 18 again.

With anatomy training such changes can be achieved. But it is of importance for the makeup artist to understandMakeup brushes the complete bone structure on the face of a human being. Also an in-depth knowledge of emotions and stage moods. With age we lose collagen which makes some parts of our body sunken-in.

For a character to appear old, the make up artist needs to make such parts of the body much more sunken-in. White powder can be used to make up wrinkles when the performer frowns or smiles. The wrinkles will appear on the skin high points and grander. It will portray over the forehead, crow’s feet area, nasolabial folds and between the eye brows.

Using Complete Matte Colors

Highlighting or shinny effects are not often used for stage makeups as this will only make the actor or performer look sweaty for a far away audience.  It is always recommended to always stay with matte colors, dry powders with no illuminating features and a great covering foundation. It will go a long way to protect against shine while on stage.

The Type of Makeup

The makeup type will largely depend on the nature of the theater. Makeups for a quick fashion photo shoot will not be the same as makeup for an entire play or scene whereby touch ups wont be possible. For every performance, the makeup artists needs to evaluate the requirement of the act or play. This is in other to conclude on the best makeup for the best possible outcome.

For theater performances makeups are mostly for better feature enhancements. Many use wax when it comes to three-dimensional projects to achieve the special effects. To avoid wash out effects by lights or distance, intense makeup is the way to go. To achieve a perfect effect, vibrant cheeks, dark lipsticks and strong eye makeup is very necessary. And this concludes our statement, the expertise and know how of a makeup artist is of prime importance for stage performances.

The Lighting Effects

Lighting can greatly contradict all the work done by a makeup artist. Every make up artist needs to consider the lighting effects when applying makeup for a performer, actor or musician. For the fact that there is a wide rage of lighting for theater arts or performances, the makeup artist needs to make sure the effects will not contradict in any way.  But rather to function in an appropriate manner with the requirements of a performance. We all know theater lights enhance cold tones which turns to bleach the colors of the makeup. On the other hand, theater makeups creates more warm tones.

Even when the lights determines the appearance of the makeup colors to the audience.  Blue turns to be brown which makes brown used more often in stage makeups over blue.  White turns to be blue, the make up artist will rather use cream colors. Yellow vanishes out and wash away, leaving the makeup artist to replace yellow tones with orange, red and pinks.

Double Checking

Now is the time for the makeup artist to confirm all the work done. The make up artist normally confirms the make up appearance during the rehearsals for the performance or play. The make up artist will be present at the audience sitting area using the lighting and distance effect to evaluate how the makeup will appear to the audience. Normally applicable to the audience close to the stage. So make up is mostly for the audience on the front rows who pay the highest tickets for the show.

Well all being said, if you are always wearing stage makeups, it is also important to consider to take proper care of your skin usually before bed time to always keep your skin healthy
